Gender Reveal!

January 13, 2017 Fariha Wajid
Gender Reveal

Afroz and I tried to be one of those couples that kept the gender a surprise until the day of the delivery, but we couldn't do it! We did decide to do a quick, fun, last minute gender reveal dinner with the family. I went back and forth on the idea of doing a gender reveal party, but the day of my ultrasound, I decided to go for it! We had a dinner planned with my family in the evening already, so we decided to get a small cake made beforehand. I thought it would be fun to find out the gender in a creative way, especially since my nieces were joining us for dinner and were excited about finding out if their cousin was going to be a boy or girl. And, I mean c'mon, it's another reason to have cake. Who doesn't want that?

During the ultrasound we asked the doctor to write the gender on a paper and seal it in an envelope. It was so hard not to peak in the envelope, but for the sake of a fun surprise, I was able to hold myself back. I gave the envelope to one of my friends, the wonderful Hira of Scrumptious by Hira, and asked her to bake a small and simple gender reveal cake. Hira was the first person who came to mind for the cake, since she recently opened up her very own bakery and has always done a wonderful job with her cakes. All of her desserts are so tasty and well made. When I went to drop off the envelope, she shared a story. Her first official cake for Scrumptious by Hira was the one she made for my bridal shower about three years ago and there I was asking her to make one for the gender reveal! I had no idea, since my sister had planned my shower and I felt so happy to have her be a part of this exciting surprise. And she did an excellent job with the cake even though I gave her such short notice. Thank you, Hira!

After cutting the cake, we found out that we will be having a little girl inshaAllah! Both Afroz and I are extremely excited and can't wait to meet her in a few months. I've been feeling so many emotions as the due date comes closer, but more than anything, both Afroz and I are just so grateful for this blessing Alhamdulilah. Becoming a mother is a huge responsibility and I hope I can be an amazing role model for my daughter inshaAllah.

What are some fun gender reveal ideas you've tried or seen before?

2018 was a roller coaster in so many ways. We bought a house. I worked on figuring out motherhood (one never truly figures it out completely right? 😬). In August I jumped full-time into photography with no intention of doing so—it kinda just took off which has been amazing Alhamdulilah😊 So many exciting new things that I’m so grateful for. But the truth is it’s been difficult to manage all the things that make me happy. It’s really tough. I mean I can totally post a completely false and sappy message of how 2018 was perfect and 2019 will be my year or whatever. But let’s be real. Instagram needs more honesty. 2018 was exhausting for me. I failed at self-care and wish I didn’t. I hope in 2019 I can master managing everything on my plate, which is everything I love to do, without feeling drained. I hope to do a better job prioritizing. I hope to be a better mom who is always present in the moment with my daughter and the rest of my family. I hope I can learn to be a pro in the kitchen so I can create memories centered around love and delicious meals just like my mom did while I was growing up. I hope to improve my skills in photography and running a business. I hope to be a more optimistic and positive person who can learn to take things step by step and take it slow. InshaAllah ♥️
