Whenever I read about people doing cool things and taking on risks, I tell myself, "Man, that is so cool. I wish I could do that." So in 2016, I'm going to stop saying that and try my very best to just do it. I'm going to be honest to myself and do what I have always dreamt of doing. I actually ended 2015 in this way. I finally launched INKMADE. The website isn't jam packed with a million products (yet), but so many things are in the works, and I am so glad I pushed myself to just get out there and start this small business. It all started with a product I designed during my time at IIT as an Architecture student.
It has been a long and wonderful journey trying to make my ideas come to life. It's taken a while to perfect everything, but I think I’ll continue making mistakes and learn from them along the way. After all, the products I’m selling are celebrating the art of imperfection.
Those of you who have been following INKMADE know that I started creating the products more than a year ago. My head was filled with so many ideas and I have been working hard to make them come to life. As the products are being produced right now in India and at my studio in Chicago, I decided to slowly put up a few items for sale as I finalize them. Everyone has been extremely patient and supportive. I’ve received numerous texts, calls, and e-mails asking when the scarves will be up for sale. Being a perfectionist, I was super critical of INKMADE’s products. I worked hard to search for the right materials and style of printing. I wanted INKMADE’s products to have a meaningful story–one of hard work, fair trade, simplicity, and beauty.
With INKMADE, I strive to celebrate the little things - the intricate forms above a window, the pattern on a doorknob, a simple surface of geometry that adds to the holistic beauty of our day-to-day routine. I am inspired by it all. I am so blessed to have Afroz by my side, supporting me as I try to make this dream into a reality. I'll be straightforward. There's absolutely no way I could have taken this risk without him. We started INKMADE together and we're working hard to share our love for good design with everyone inshaAllah.
